Liverpool are closing in on American forward Clint Dempsey after agreeing a fee thought to be around £10million. The Fulham man has an impressive record, playing as a versatile striker or attacking midfielder, with 17 goals scored last season.
The move for the 29-year-old may pave the way for manager Brendan Rodgers to allow striker Andy Carroll to return to Newcastle, with terms still being negotiated.
