Ireland lost their first group game to Croatia thanks to goals from Everton player Jelavic, Mandzukic and a Given own goal. Ireland were 1-0 down in first 3 minutes but responded with a St. Ledger goal. However Croatia proved too strong for the Irish and their technical ability showed throughout the game. Ireland will now have to beat Italy and Spain to gurantee their passage to the quarter finals.
