Roy Hodgson unveiled as England Manager

Roy Hodgson was today formally unveiled as England manager. He said in the press conference: “I’m looking forward to the task ahead. Everyone knows it is not an easy one but I’m hoping that everyone will get behind the team,”.

It will surprise some fans to learn that the West Bromwich Albion manager was the unanimous choice  of the 4 man selection panel.  Hodgson has signed a 4 year deal which would mean he would be in charge of England during three tournaments. Many people were surprised at his appointment. Most players and fans alike were opting for Harry Redknapp. Striker Wayne Rooney had said on Twitter following Capello’s departure: “Got to be English to replace him. Harry Redknapp for me.” Defender Rio Ferdinand tweeted: “Harry Redknapp would be my choice by a distance.”

Hodgson said: “Every coach has got to win over the players. It’s not the first time I’ve stepped into a group I don’t know but my CV suggests I’ve succeeded fairly well with that,”.

“Every coach taking a new job needs to make certain they get the players on side, united behind the cause. We’re England, the England football team. We interest a lot of people. I have a lot of responsibility but then so do the players.”

Hodgson also spoke about the message he received for fans favourite Harry Redknapp: I’ve got great respect for Harry. He sent me a voicemail message that I will reply to. He’s been very gracious,”.

“I hope we will remain friends. We’ve unwittingly become rivals but it won’t affect our relationship. He’s dealt with it well in all his interviews and I appreciate it.”

On the Euro 2012 championship Hodgson said: “It’s never going to be easy and it’s a little more difficult because the man who qualified the team left and I come in at a late stage. The players would be disappointed if we expected less than to win the tournament. It’s important everyone gets behind the team.”

It is thought that he will take Wayne Rooney despite the striker not being available for the first 2 matches.
